Stories information for the Blakemans

Moses Blakeman I

Moses Blakeman I, was born Moses Blackman on Mar 10, 1781 in Virginia. His name changed to Blakeman later in his life. We are still searching for information about his parents. Moses married Betty Elizabeth King on Oct 22, 1818 in Grainger County, Tennessee. We have Moses in the War of 1812, he was a Private. We have Moses buying land, 80.63 acre, on Aug 8, 1837 in Vinton County, Ohio. We have not found a sale or will on land but later Betty bought land in same area. Here are the 1840 and 1850 Census for Moses and Betty where they moved from Porter Twnsp, Scioto County, Ohio to Hamilton Twnsp, Jackson County Ohio. We have Moses passing away around 1850-1853, no records or gravestone for him. We believe he died in Jackson County. Betty, his wife, passed away in 1865 in Jackson County. We are part of his son Moses II and have more info on him.

Betty Elizabeth King

Betty Elizabeth King was born around 1800 in North Carolina. We are still looking for information on her parents and birth information. Betty married Moses Blakeman I (Blackman) on Oct 22, 1818 in Tennesssee. The marriage license shows Bety King. Betty bought land in Ohio on Jun 01, 1853, this land buying could be right after her husband Moses I passed away. We are not sure if this is the same property of Moses I. We have not found any will's showing Moses leaving the 80 acres of land to her. Betty passed away in Jan 1865 in Liberty Twnsp, Jackson County, Ohio. We do not know where her and Moses I are buried, but will keep looking in Jackson County

Sarah Ann Blakeman

Sarah Ann Blakeman was born on Oct 1822 in Ashland, Kentucky to Moses Blakeman I and Betty King. Some say she was born in Virginia. She was 1 of 10 known children of which 4 were female. She married Adam Comer Jr on Jan 06, 1842 in Scioto County, Ohio with whom she had 9 known children. Grace Carson found Sarah being mentioned in the estate of Eliz Nance Blakeman 1865-1866 Pike Co. I have not been able to find this document yet. Sarah husband Adam, died before 1870 from what we can see somewhere between Pike County, Ohio and Saline County, Illinois. She was alone in the 1860 census but they had a child together in 1866 (Mary). Sarah passed away around 1902 in Saline County, Ilinois. She was living with her daugther Mary's in the 1900 census. My son's family O'Neal's are from Williamson County, Illinois which is right next to Saline County.

Moses B Blakeman II

Moses B Blakeman II was born Feb 02, 1824 in Big Sandy, Kentucky son of Moses I and Betty Elizabeth. Moses married Elizabeth Betty Butler on Aug 06 1852 in Piketon, Pike County, Ohio. They had 10 known children from 1852 to 1873. We have a land purchase for a M Blakeman n Jackson County but no proof that it was for our Moses but most likely. There are 2 marriage dates for Moses and Elizabeth. Still trying to figure out which is correct. Here are the 1860, 1870, and 1880 Census. Moses B Blakeman II moved with family to Piketon in 1894. Moses died on Sept 20, 1898 in Piketon, Pike County, Ohio. Where his son Moses III cared for his mother Elizabeth until her death in 1911. He then moved to Chilicothe and lived out the rest of his life except for the last couple days where he lived with his sister in Piketon. Then she married James Gillenwater on Mar 06, 1848 in Jackson County, Ohio to where they had 8 children between 1848 to 1866. We have a son Samuel is not in any census because he was only 1 year and died Sep 26, 1867. We have her in the 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880 and 1900 census Headstones Provided for Deceased Union Civil War Veterans, 1879-1903 about James Gillenwater Name: James Gillenwater State of Cemetery: Ohio Date of Death: 5 Jan 1876
The tombstone indicates that he served in Co. H of Ohio's 176th Infantry during the Civil War. Enlisted in the war on September 8, 1864 and was mustered out at Nashville, Tennessee on June 14, 1865. It is interesting that a Gillenwaters was in Hawkins Co., Tenn. in 1811 when a Moses Blakeman appears on the tax list there. Charlotte passed away on Jul 27, 1903 in Pike County, Ohio. She is buried with her husband James in the Beaver Chapel Cemetery.
I found an obit for her memorial:
Beloved mother and friend, Charlotte Gillenwater was born on the 11 day of March, 1826 and in early youth came to Scioto county, O, from West Va. with Moses and Elizabeth Blakeman, her parents and was reared a Christain from early childhood. She was married to James Gillenwater who died June 5, 1875. She has shown her reverence and loyalty to her deceased husband by hard toil and sincerity and remained an honorable soldier's widow, a mother to many an orphan, a friend to many an outcast and was ever trying to do good and help those in trouble. When quite young she became a member of the Baptist church and succeeded in living a Christian through all disappointments of life holding on to the cross and saying "give me Jesus and you may take all the world from me." During her last illness she wrote her daughter, Mary a letter bidding her and all farewell, saying she was going to die and telling her how she longed to meet them all in the land of rest. In all of her illness she was never heard to murmer but would gently say, she longed to go where there is no suffering. Calm and sweetly-her last moments were spent. In the deep shadows of a summer evening, July 30, her spirit burst its earthly prison and took flight heavenward, leaving behind the weeping and wailing of those who mourned her loss. Mourning the mother are five children, three girls Mary, Hannah and Jane and two boys, William and James M. including her two brothers' James and Andrew and two sisters Malinda and Elizabeth and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Obituary in the paper and it reads: Beloved mother and friend, Charlotte Gillenwater was born on the 11 day of March, 1826 and in early youth came

Hiram Blakeman

Newspaper Article "MEETS WITH TRAGIC DEATH".
Hiram Blakeman, Sustains Injuries Which Result in Death Last Thursday at Piketon.
Hiram Blakeman 65, of Piketon, sustained injuries, which resulted in his
death last Thursday morning about 11:00 o'clock, when the ditch in which he
was working at Piketon caved in on him. His nephew, James Blakeman, working
on top of the ditch, saw the bank start to cave and cried out a warning.
Blakeman raised his head at the alarm, just in time to catch the full force
of several tons of moving earth squarely on his head. He was buried from
sight. A rescue party worked feverishly to extricate Blakeman and succeeded
in uncovering the body within ten minutes. The man was alive and breathing
at the time, but despite frantic efforts on the part of rescuers and Dr. I.
P. Seller and Dr. C. J. Penn, died ten minutes afterward.
The ditch in which the unfortunate man was working, was part of the new
drainage system recently authorized by the Piketon village council, and
Blakeman was employed by the village at the time. His nephew, James, also
employed on the job, was stretching a grade line on top of the bank when the
accident occurred. At the point where the cave-in occurred, the ditch was
about eight feet deep.
Blakeman's nephew headed the rescue gang, composed of Clyde Baker, Cleve
Blakeman, Edward Allen, Theo. Taylor and Alfred Newton.
The dead man is survived by his wife, one son, Herman of Chillicothe; two
daughters, Mrs. Raymond Lee and Mrs. John Farmer of Piketon.
Funeral services were held at the Church of Christ in Piketon, Sunday
afternoon at 1:30 o'clock, and burial made at the Mound cemetery. Rev. J.
W. Sylvester, pastor of the church, officiated.
